Freelance Whales - Girl U Want
A fantastic cover of DEVO’s “Girl U Want”.
As Judah Dadone told Spinner, “We recorded this song for kicks a couple months ago, because Kevin [Read, multi-instrumentalist] is a really big Devo fan. We wanted to change the feel of the song dramatically, since the original is like a really straight-ahead, rock, punk, Mark Mothersbaugh freakout. Ours comes across as more of a ballad. It was recorded around Valentine’s Day, and we thought it might be weird or fun to make this song to have an earnest longing, since the lyrics are so explicitly based in the realm of unrequited love.”
The album cover is nice.
The song is gorgeous.
And the band name is fun to say for some reason.
All around win. Looking forward to his full album. You can check out all the details here.
(Also: from Canada, which follows my rules of “if it’s canadian/french/british i like it” with music. Unreal how spot on those things are.)

“So Tired (Mood Version)” - Places
This song couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve listened to it over and over again for the past hour or so. I would change the song, but I don’t think I could find anything more appropriately soothing for my current state of being. The Marietta, Georgia-based Nico Giarrano makes music under the Places moniker. I posted his fantastic downtempo pop-track “Heartbreaker” back in December. Anyway, he’s just released his latest digital album entitled March that you can pick up for whatever price you’d like to throw at him via his bandcamp.
